Walter Elias (Walt) Disney was born on December 5, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois. He was born into a middle-class family, and was one of five children. He grew up in Marceline, Missouri, and began art and drawing at a young age. As Walt got older, his family moved back to Chicago, where he attended McKinley High School in Chicago and studied drawing and photography. In addition to drawing, Disney loved to act and perform; his father, however, was stern and very unsupportive, so Disney was forced to perform against his father's will.
In the fall of 1918, Walt tried to enlist in the military at the age of sixteen, but he was rejected for being too young. He ended up joining The Red Cross and he spent a year in France, driving an ambulance; he painted his cartoons all over the exterior.
When he returned home from France, he began a career in commercial art, and made his own company, "Laugh-O-Grams" before he was even twenty-two. Unfortunately, they went bankrupt; Walt still refused to give up on his dream.
